The City Of Angels

Board Threads Posts Last Post
No New Posts Chinese Theater

The most famous movie theater in the world. Built by Sid Grauman in 1926, the Chinese Theatre closely resembles a Chinese pagoda, with a dragon figure across the front and two stone lions guarding the entrance. The 1920s look on the inside of the Chinese Theatre was beautifully preserved, the 2200 red seats, elaborate wall decorations and Chinese chandeliers are an impressive sight. The theatre itself has appeared in many movies, for instance "Speed" or "Singing in the rain" - it's been around for a while and has been a vital part of Hollywood ever since. The forecourt of the Chinese Theatre is covered with foot and hand prints of stars who left their prints in wet concrete to immortalize themselves here. Since 1927, when Norma Talmadge accidentally stepped in the wet cement, over 200 Hollywood legends had their prints implanted here. Marilyn Monroe, Shirley Temple, Gloria Swanson, Liz Taylor or John Wayne - they're all here, as are countless more celebrities from the past eight decades.

Millions of tourists flock to this unusual memorial every year, and it should definitely be a part of every Hollywood sightseeing program - it's an almost irresistible urge to place your feet next to the prints and compare sizes, note how incredibly small the feet (or shoes, rather) of the 1920s and 1930s divas were! Until today, Grauman's Chinese Theatre is the place where Hollywood holds its most prestigious movie premieres - the glamour hasn't faded. From the forecourt, as well as from the neighbouring Hollywood and Highland complex, you get a good view of the Hollywood sign up on the hills.

No New Posts Chinatown

Los Angeles has a rather large group of Chinese citizens, and this fact is visible in the city's appearance once you are a little north of El Pueblo and the Union Station - this is where Chinatown begins. The Chinese population of Los Angeles is concentrated in this area, especially around the Sun Yat-Sen square, a central place named after the first president of the Republic of China. With roughly 10.000 Chinese and many more Asian-Americans from other countries, this is the densest concentration of Asian population in Los Angeles after Japantown and Koreatown. A Chinese gate resembling a pagoda marks the entrance to Chinatown, and many authentic small stores are located around the square selling spices, herbs, teas and Chinese souvenirs.

Not exactly a sightseeing hotspot, but if you fancy traditional Chinese food, definitely do go here for a dinner and do the sightseeing program as a constitutional. Countless excellent Chinese restaurants can be found here serving everything from Dim-Sum variations to delicate specialties you don't get everywhere - establishments like the Empress Pavillion or Ocean Seafood are a connoisseurs' paradise we can only recommend.

No New Posts Beverly Hills

A community in the Los Angeles area that is famous for its wealth and the exclusiveness of the local lifestyle. Like Hollywood or Santa Monica, Beverly Hills is actually an independent town with own administration, but has come to be known as one of the most exclusive residential areas of the world and is generally regarded as part of Los Angeles. The picturesque tree-lined streets of Beverly Hills, its many world-famous luxury shops and the many stars that live here in sometimes incredible mansions have earned this community the reputation of being so "money" that regular people better stick to window-shopping.

And indeed, if you look at Rodeo Drive, Via Rodeo or some of the other prestigious addresses for upscale shopping, the impression seems to be correct. However, Beverly Hills is more than just shopping - there are excellent restaurants all over, some of the finest hotels in the world are located here (i.e. the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Regent Beverly Wilshire) and for sightseeing, some very eccentric private mansions.

Take Hugh Hefner's "Playboy Mansion", for instance, the O'Neill House (507 N. Rodeo Dr.) which was inspired by Gaudi , Anderton Court (322 N. Rodeo Dr.), a late work of Frank Lloyd Wright, Jayne Mansfield's Pink Palace (10100 Sunset Blvd.) or even more extraordinary oddities like the Cactus Garden (Santa Monica Blvd. at Camden Dr.), a full city block with one of the largest collections of cacti in the world. Beverly Hills has style, tranquility and exclusiveness, and if you want to be close to the action of Los Angeles while staying in a laid-back environment at the same time, this is your place.

No New Posts Walt Disney Concert Hall

With the Walt Disney Concert Hall, downtown Los Angeles has gained an impressive building that will change the silhouette of the city for the future. Just like in Bilbao, Frank Gehry has developed a piece of functional art that is astounding in its entirety. The curved steel facade glistening in the sun light is a sight for itself, and the surrounding areas were designed beautifully as to allow visitors to walk around and experience the Concert Hall from all angles. Now, the Los Angeles Symphonic Orchestra finally has an acoustically suitable home and doesn't need to perform in the Taper Forum anymore. The acoustic technicians from Nagato Acoustics, Japan, were integrated into the design of the concert hall from day one, and the result is an excellent compromise between Gehry's aesthetics and the need for a good sound inside. The concert hall's design takes inspirations from Scharoun's Berlin Symphony, which is well known for its excellent acoustics. However, in designing the façade, Gehry didn't compromise but used his typical style that has earned him global reputation over the past few years. The fountain made of Delft porcelain at the back of the building commemorates founder Lillian Disney and was created by Gehry himself. The Walt Disney Concert Hall, as one of the most fascinating modern buildings the city has to offer, should definitely be on your sightseeing itinerary for Los Angeles!

At America's favorite theme park, experience GhostRider the world's best wooden roller coaster, Supreme Scream, 30-stories up, 3 seconds down and the high-octane thrill of Xcelerator, rated the world's best launch coaster, sending riders 0-80 in 2.3 seconds. This is a good place for thrill-seekers and more tame persons.
