Walt Disney Concert Hall
With the Walt Disney Concert Hall, downtown Los Angeles has gained an impressive building that will change the silhouette of the city for the future. Just like in Bilbao, Frank Gehry has developed a piece of functional art that is astounding in its entirety. The curved steel facade glistening in the sun light is a sight for itself, and the surrounding areas were designed beautifully as to allow visitors to walk around and experience the Concert Hall from all angles. Now, the Los Angeles Symphonic Orchestra finally has an acoustically suitable home and doesn't need to perform in the Taper Forum anymore. The acoustic technicians from Nagato Acoustics, Japan, were integrated into the design of the concert hall from day one, and the result is an excellent compromise between Gehry's aesthetics and the need for a good sound inside. The concert hall's design takes inspirations from Scharoun's Berlin Symphony, which is well known for its excellent acoustics. However, in designing the façade, Gehry didn't compromise but used his typical style that has earned him global reputation over the past few years. The fountain made of Delft porcelain at the back of the building commemorates founder Lillian Disney and was created by Gehry himself. The Walt Disney Concert Hall, as one of the most fascinating modern buildings the city has to offer, should definitely be on your sightseeing itinerary for Los Angeles!
